What a ring making class here is really like

Most people who come to the ring workshop have never held a torch. That’s the point. It’s a beginner jewelry making class built so that three or four hours later you have formed, soldered, set, and polished a sterling silver ring that fits your finger, with a stone you chose. Here’s the afternoon, in my students’ words.

  1. I

Book a seat, then just show up

Pick a date on the calendar and book one seat or all four. Arrive 5–10 minutes early to check in, climb the stairs to the barn loft, and your bench is waiting with everything on it.

“We appreciated the easy to use and streamlined process from booking to our finished rings.”

    Hikao
  2. II

    Choose your stone

Trays of gemstones and natural stones, plus sterling bands to match. The selection changes with my inventory, so every class is a little different. Take your time.

“It was so fun choosing the stone and learning all the steps to making a silver ring.”

    Heidi
  3. III

    Safety first, then hands on

Class starts on time with safety instructions and a demonstration of each step. After that, you do the work yourself at your own bench.

“Great class with lots of options and hands-on teaching!”

    Andrew
  4. IV

    Build the bezel and solder

Form your band, wrap a bezel around your stone, and solder it with a real torch. I’m at your elbow for every joint, at whatever pace you work.

“She is so attentive to each student, no matter their pace or abilities.”

    Deb
  5. V

Set it, polish it, wear it home

Push the bezel over the stone so it holds, polish until it shines, and put it on. You walk out wearing it.

“I went in hoping to be not embarrassed with my creation but left shocked that I made such a beautiful ring.”

    Christina
  6. VI

And then, usually, the next class

A lot of ring students sign up for the pendant, earring, or four-week workshop before they leave.

“I signed up on the spot for the pendant class!”

    Heidi

Take every seat and the class is yours. It’s a birthday party idea for adults, a bachelorette activity, or a girls’ day out where everyone leaves with a different ring.

Questions

Questions and booking policies

How do you make a silver ring?

In class it goes like this: choose a stone, form a sterling band to fit your finger, shape a bezel (a thin wall of silver) around the stone and solder it in place with a torch, then push the bezel over the stone so it holds tight, and polish. I demonstrate each step, then you do it yourself at your own bench. The ring workshop →

How long does it take to make a ring?

Plan on 3–4 hours for the ring workshop, start to finish, including time to choose your stone. You leave wearing the ring.

What is a bezel setting?

A bezel is a thin band of silver that wraps around the edge of a stone. Once it’s soldered in place, you gently push the top edge over the stone so it’s held all the way around. It’s one of the oldest and most secure ways to set a stone, and it’s the setting you learn in every workshop here.

Is silversmithing hard to learn?

The basics are very learnable in an afternoon. Most of my students have never soldered anything before they sit down at the bench. Getting really good takes practice, which is what the four-week workshop is for, but you don’t need experience or any special skill to make a piece you’re proud of. The four-week workshop →

What should I wear to a jewelry making class?

Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, and closed-toe shoes. Tie back long hair and skip loose sleeves or dangly scarves, since you’ll be working near a torch. Everything else, from tools to safety gear, is at your bench.

Can I book the whole class for my group?

Yes. Seats are sold one at a time, so book every seat and the class is yours. Ring and four-week sessions have four seats; pendant and earring sessions have two. It’s a good fit for birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls’ nights, and small team outings. For anything larger, email me. Email Sarah →

When should I arrive?

Please plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early to allow time for check-in, so class can begin promptly at the scheduled start time.

What if I’m running late?

Workshops begin on time. If you arrive after the start, you may miss important safety instructions and demonstrations. Arrivals more than 15 minutes late may not be able to participate, depending on the project and safety requirements. Late arrivals are not eligible for refunds or rescheduling, as each class is carefully structured and prepared in advance.

What if I can’t make it?

If you do not attend and do not give advance notice, the cost of the workshop is forfeited. Because class sizes are limited, seats are reserved, and materials are prepared for each person, there are no refunds or transfers for no-shows.

What if only a few people sign up?

If fewer than two people sign up for your class, I may offer a rescheduled date or a refund. I’ll contact you the day before the class (the cutoff for new bookings) with your options.

Can I book a private lesson instead?

Yes. If group classes aren’t your thing, reach out and we can set up a two-hour one-on-one workshop.
