How the earring workshop goes

Earrings are twice the work and twice the fun: two stones, two bezels, and getting them to match. With two seats per class, it’s one of the most relaxed, hands-on jewelry making workshops I teach.

  1. I

    Pick a pair

Choose two stones from the trays that belong together, or two that don’t and make them work.

  2. II

    Two bezels, plus texture

Build a bezel for each stone and add texture to the silver, so the pair looks handmade in the best way.

  3. III

    Solder and set both

Same torch, same technique, twice. By the second earring you know exactly what you’re doing.

  4. IV

    Choose your ear wires

Pick the ear wires you like, attach them, and your earrings are ready to wear out the door.

Birthday ideas for adults

Give them the seat next to you

Book both seats and spend the birthday making something. They leave with a pair of earrings and a better story than a gift bag.

A gift that isn’t another thing

Reserve a seat in their name or send a gift card and let them choose the date. They get an afternoon at the bench and a piece of sterling jewelry they made themselves.

Questions

Questions about the earring workshop

I’ve never done anything like this. Is that okay?

That’s most people, and it’s who the classes are built for. We start with how to hold the saw, and nobody is ever behind.

What is a bezel setting?

A bezel is a thin band of silver that wraps around the edge of a stone. Once it’s soldered in place, you gently push the top edge over the stone so it’s held all the way around. It’s one of the oldest and most secure ways to set a stone, and it’s the setting you learn in every workshop here.

What’s the difference between sterling silver and fine silver?

Fine silver is 99.9% pure: soft, bright, and easy to push over a stone, which makes it ideal for bezels. Sterling is 92.5% silver mixed with a little copper for strength, so it holds up as a ring band, a cuff, or an ear wire. In class you work with both, and both are included in the price.

What should I wear to a jewelry making class?

Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, and closed-toe shoes. Tie back long hair and skip loose sleeves or dangly scarves, since you’ll be working near a torch. Everything else, from tools to safety gear, is at your bench.

Can I book the whole class for my group?

Yes. Seats are sold one at a time, so book every seat and the class is yours. Ring and four-week sessions have four seats; pendant and earring sessions have two. It’s a good fit for birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls’ nights, and small team outings. For anything larger, email me. Email Sarah →
